“One of my life goals is to become grateful of all that I have taken for granted.”
– Selene Kinder

Gratitude is one of the most powerful weapons in creating the life we want to live – it helps us raise our energy, gives us perspective on our problems & helps attract more of what we want into our lives. It is amazing how a gratitude attitude improves every department of your life, including your health and happiness as well as your prosperity. Using a gratitude journal once a day can also improve mental health and well-being.

To choose an attitude of gratitude, you have to believe that it is worth persevering for. Gratitude, contrary to popular belief, is not all open starry skies and rainbows. Sometimes it’s trudging for miles, feeling outcast, alone and separate from the world. It’s seeing the truth all around you, and being unable to close your eyes and make it go away and then, and still remaining grateful.

Even when I was not in a place I wanted to be I was able to remain grateful. I began a gratitude journal and it has been responsible for a magnitude of joy in my life. I let go of all those negative viewpoints that I had learned over the years. I fell in love with my life. I want every woman to experience this joy that cannot be taken from you. It’s extremely empowering.  You can search the world over but you won’t find happiness until you realize happiness isn’t what you want. It’s being content with what you already have.

Here are the 5 ways gratitude has changed my life.

1. Freedom:

Sometimes life feels so stuck and bound, like we are shackled down by heavy chains with nothing but the darkness of a tunnel hitting a dead-end ahead of us. Having a gratitude attitude embarks you on a journey of unlearning everything you have been taught, and rediscovering the world, life and yourself, with new eyes.

Instead of cramming my mind with insecurities and trying to look like other people though rigorous exercise routines, self-loathing and cycles of starving and binge-eating, I softened my view of myself. I started walking every day, and spending time in nature. I ate what I felt like, when I felt hungry and celebrated instead of feared food. I lost weight and relaxed into a healthy, natural weight and body shape.

Choosing gratitude means to let go. Letting go of how you think your life should be. Letting go of fitting in a certain box. Letting go of jealousy. Letting of having things a certain way. It means  FREEDOM.

2. Perspective:

A gratitude attitude helps you focus on everything that makes your life wonderful. It takes the attention away from the negativity and minimizes its influence on you.

Imagine you were headed outside one day, ready to spend time in the sun when all of a sudden it started raining. You immediately become upset and run back inside afraid to get wet. You thought you’d just wait for another day.

Now imagine you had been in a hospital bed for months and had one last chance to go outside. You walk out and feel the rain drops hit your skin, and instead of running back inside you smile and run through the rain. You enjoy it, you are thankful. The weather isn’t perfect, but to you it is.

We must begin to live as if we could die at any moment… we must learn to appreciate what we have even if the conditions are not “perfect”. We aren’t always going to have another day.

3. Love:

Gratitude gracefully focuses your attention in love. You begin to radiate good energy and love life like you’ve never done before. You show appreciation for the people in your life. You begin to focus on all the amazing qualities they have. You’ll notice things in your loved ones that you completely overlooked.  You’ll be giving more love and more love will come to you.

4. Abundance:

Living a grateful life means you are able to enjoy your life now without waiting for something big in the future. You don’t need certain amount of money or certain level of success to be happy. Gratitude allows you to be happy right now- with what you have. You will see the abundance your life already has and feel a sense of fullness.

Once I started my gratitude journal  I discovered all the blessings I already had in my life. I stopped focusing on what was missing and realized what I had was more than enough.

5. Motivation:

When you are grateful you fill your mind with uplifting and inspiring information, it will keep you motivated. In my gratitude journal I have pages of all the wins in my life – not matter how small. Oftentimes we forget how far we’ve come and the successes we’ve already accomplished. An infectious, gratitude attitude can shift your entire life. Infusing your mind with positive thoughts will cause you to produce more positive results in your life. Right now you’re getting as many opportunities as you think you can have. Purposefully infusing your life with a gratitude attitude will keep you motivated and eliminate all negative sources out of your life.

Choosing gratefulness is literally a moment to moment decision that you get to make. It doesn’t matter where you are, or what you are doing. Gratefulness is after all, a feeling.
